First peek at the new house

Wow. What a month it has been. There’s nothing quite like a cross-country relocation and the subsequent settling into a new home to remind one of one’s age. Thirty-eight isn’t old but it feels that way when it wakes up after three long days of hauling boxes and furniture up and down three flights of stairs. There were a good few mornings there on which I woke up and could have sworn I’d been run over by a truck the day before. All of these tired muscles are settling back into place now, but there’s still a lot of work to be done. Nonetheless, I’m taking a break to take you on an informal first tour of the new house. Would you mind slipping your shoes off at the door on your way in? Thanks, ya’ll.

Here’s our unadorned entryway. The front doors are absolutely gorgeous and–together with the trim–make for a grand welcome, or will, at least, once we spice things up with a runner, a bench and something on the walls.

The space is fairly sterile at the moment. As we make our way further into the house I’m afraid you’ll find that to be a common theme. We’ve only been here a little over a week; I need a bit of time to warm up the space and make it my own.

This is the greatroom. I’ve got big plans for that mantel and those built-ins.

Next, we have the keeping room. It’s basically a family room located just off the kitchen. So far, it’s the most put together room we’ve got but even it has a long way to go.

The kitchen is one of my favorite rooms in the house. It’s so bright and airy and well-lit. The commercial stove is a dream to cook on. Last night I made a meal with both bacon and garlic but thanks to that outdoor venting hood, the house smelled perfectly fresh all night long.

Come on with me, we’re going to take a peek outside. What’s that you say? What spots?

275B9264

Ah, yes. Those spots. It seems we have a bit of a ladybug infestation. Granted, the ladybugs aren’t nearly as problematic as, say, ants or spiders, but believe me when I tell you that I have had well over my fill of ladybugs. They’re everywhere. And they’re driving me slightly batty.

You might remember how we had some struggles with the design of our backyard. As it turns out, we love the outcome. We had the builder nestle this outdoor fireplace right into the retaining wall and then build a circular patio around it. Doing so totally maximized our space in the yard and still allowed us to have the fireplace we really didn’t want to give up.

Let’s head back inside now and take a look at some of my favorite details.

I wish I could show you the rest of the house. The trouble is that we have only a select few rooms even somewhat put together. The rest of the rooms in the house look a lot like this.

We’re working on it–one box at a time. Thanks for stopping by, friends. Come back real soon, m’kay?

  1. I love it!! Just glad it’s you and not me lugging all those boxes upstairs – been there, done that!!

  2. Your home is gorgeous! I know it will soon have its very own Darcie signature, making it truly a home.

  3. On our last move Chris hired some guys from a UHaul website. Two 19 year olds, scrawny and strong. We paid something like $50/hour for the pair and kept them busy all day. Best expenditure of the whole move.

Your outdoor fireplace! I know you were concerned about it but it looks just lovely. Can’t wait to see the rest!

    1. Oy. We actually had a moving company do most of the work on the actual moving day. It was the aftermath that got me.

  4. Beautiful!! It’s looking like Darcie’s home already! I have a strong, 16 year old boy if you need to borrow him. He can be there in an hour. ;) If you feed him and Jeff talks rocket science with him, he’ll probably never leave. Ha! For realz, if you need any help, just give us a shout.

    1. Send that boy our way anytime. He’ll be right at home here in Rocket City! I’d love for you guys all to visit soon!

  5. So wonderful Darcie! We have a ladybug infestation here also. So annoying.

    1. And they totally smell. I’ve sucked them up in my vacuum cleaner and now every time I turn it on it smells like a weird dirt/straw combo. Who knew?

  6. Absolutely stunning! Love the whites and beiges! Your rock fireplaces turned out amazing! Love the Namaste? Pillows? And your lights… Very well done. Can’t wait to see the rest!

    1. I can’t wait to show the rest (in part because it means that I’ll be done with all the work!).

  7. I LOVE IT! Love the floors, the kitchen, the overall feel – very stylish and decorated, but homey and comfortable. Thank you for sharing your journey! I’m so happy for you and your family! And the ladybugs, yes they are a thing in the south. I’m sure like me you used to think ladybugs were cute – until you see that many in your home. It’s creepy. They are seasonal though and only hang around for awhile. Get ready for the giant flying roaches.

    1. Wait, what? Clearly we aren’t as good of friends as I thought we were or surely you would have TOLD ME about these “giant flying roaches” *before* I relocated. Ahem. I’ll forgive you this once, as long as you aren’t holding out on me anymore. ;)

  8. It looks pretty great for a little over a week!
I remember having a lady bug problem in San Antonio. I don’t recall how we got rid of them.
Those palmetto bugs were the worst thing about living in Atlanta. I had nightmares. I guess you traded in the scorpions for flying roaches.

  9. Very nice, congratulations. We had the pest exterminator come to get rid of the ladybugs in TX; didn’t really work. Of course, this was the Fort Sam Houston post exterminator so I can’t really vouch for how good he was. I remember them being seasonal, not there when it was warm out.
