Over the weekend, our family attended a friend’s big 4 – 0 birthday celebration. Not wanting to show up empty-handed, I came up with the idea of putting together a survival kit. The only problem with my brilliant plan was that both Pinterest and Google let me down when it came to searching for something cute and fun without being ridiculously cheesy.
My solution? Create my own from-scratch kit and post the results here on the ol’ blog. I’m rather happy with the way it turned out. Requiring only a printer, a gift basket of some sort, and a trip to a local convenience store, this is one birthday gift that can easily be pulled together at the last minute.
Included in my survival kit were:
- War Head sour twists
- Gobstoppers
- Reese’s Pieces
- Lemon Heads
- Laffy Taffy
- Snickers
- Extra! gum
- PayDay
- Rolo’s
- SweetTarts
- Skittles
- Airplane bottles of Jose Cuervo, Skyy Vodka and Captain Morgan’s Rum
Once everything was gathered, I arranged the candy and booze in the basket (quite artfully even if I do say so myself). To pull off the survival kit theme, I needed to specify what each item should be used for. To that end, I came up with clever sayings for each candy and compiled them on a handy 40th birthday survival kit candy sayings printable and printed it out on brown scrapbook paper. To bring it all together, I also printed a 40th birthday survival kit hang tag for the basket. I glued the backs of my printable sheets together and inserted a dowel in between the them, topping the whole thing off with a colorful bow. Voilà. Mission accomplished.
I would guess that the party was for a woman since you included so much candy and sweets in your concoction.
A clever gift!
Clever and creative…just like you.
I just saw this one, how cute and clever and excellent for any milestone BD
I love this! We are celebrating two good friends turning 40 this weekend and I so want to use this. I can’t get the link to the hang tag to work though? Can you help? The idea is great nonetheless!!!
Thanks for giving me a heads up that the link was broken, Pat. I fixed it. You shouldn’t have any trouble printing the hang tag now. Enjoy!
What’s the hunk?
It’s a candy bar and is widely available, Stephanie.
Can u repost and post what the tag says, I could make out what each item was for. Thanks

If you just click on the link above, Bev, you can simply print it. The link reads “handy 40th birthday survival kit candy sayings printable” and shows up in orange text in the body of the post.

I just checked and they sayings are there on the printable. You just have to scroll down to the second page. Enjoy!
Hi there,
I can’t find Big hunk anywhere where I live! Is there anyway I can delete it off the list? I tried but it won’t let me! Any suggestions?
Thanks,
Julie
