Alaska bound

Our trip to Alaska is right around the corner.  And because I can hardly contain the excitement a single day more, I thought I’d post some details of our trip in hopes that it helps to relieve my anticipation so that I can get through the last, lingering days.  So…who wants to hear about our itinerary?

I thought you’d never ask.

Our trip will begin in Seattle, where we’ll be spending a couple of nights prior to our cruise.  While we’re there, we plan to visit the Pacific Science Center for some hands-on scientific fun.  We’ll also be eating in not one, but two restaurants featured on Best Thing I Ever Ate.  Also, we’ll indulge in the obligatory fish and chips.  We’ll visit Pike Place Market to watch the fish mongers in action, ride the monorail (if only because it reminds us of Disney), and check out the Klondike Gold Rush museum.  And then…then!  We’ll board the Disney Wonder for seven nights of Alaskan adventure.

I’ve gone all out with the cruise excursions.  Here is what we’ve got planned:

In Skagway, we’re taking a ferry to the little town of Haines where we’ll ride mules (think golf carts, not donkeys) along a rugged trail to the top of a scenic mountain.  On the way back down, we’ll stop at a rustic cabin for a meal of fresh Alaskan halibut.  I’m kind of drooling just thinking about it.

When the ship sails into Ketchikan, we’ll be hoping for fog-free skies so that our flightseeing tour into the Misty Fjords National Monument can take off without incident.

I’m also holding out hope that when the flightseeing tour is over we’ll have time to visit Totem Bight state park.  I hear it’s gorgeous.

Quite possibly, Juneau is the port the kids are most excited for; our excursion there is an exciting one!  We’re hopping on a helicopter which will take us up close for great views of a glacier.  And then–get this–we’re going to land on the glacier and walk around.  Cool right (pun intended).  We’ll then board the helicopter once again for a quick trip to a dog mushing camp where we’ll get to try our hand mushing!

All of that plus top-notch entertainment aboard the Disney Wonder.  Grams and Gramps are joining us again and we’re going to be celebrating their 54th wedding anniversary at Palo, the adults only restaurant on the ship.

It’s an amazing line-up, right?  I fully intend to report back with lots of pictures.  Stay tuned :)

PS.  Remember how my intention was to relieve some of the anticipation?  FAIL.

  1. This sounds like an amazing trip!
My husband’s sister spent a summer in Alaska and we still regret not going up to visit her. It was one of those things where we couldn’t quite get ourselves to cough up $1400 for plane tickets, but in hindsight, we’re always, what the hell were we thinking?!

  2. As usual I am totally jealous!!! I was born in Adak, Alaska and we moved when I was 2 so it’s on my bucket list to do an Alaskan cruise and go up there! Can’t wait to hear all about it!

  3. So fun! Matt and I went on an Alaskan cruise almost 4 years ago. We did the helicopter to the glacier/dog sledding camp! It was truly one of my favorite things that I have EVER done! I will never forget it and I hope to one day do it again with my kids! You are gonna LOVE it!

Can’t wait to hear all about it!
