Redesign reveal: boy bedroom

For the last several months, I’ve been gearing up to redecorate Jayce’s bedroom.  Prior to this update, his bedroom was based on a vintage sports theme with a slate blue and Americana red color scheme.  While I really liked it then, I can’t say I was sorry to see that stuff go.  The new bedroom doesn’t have a theme, per se.  Rather, I chose some very boyish colors and some very boyish elements and spent a couple of months perusing Target aisles and Etsy shops until I found just the right things.  And then–armed with Pinterest inspiration–I set to work.  Truly, I couldn’t be happier with how it turned out.

Let’s begin at the beginning, shall we?  That is, the color scheme.  I chose colors based on this image I found on Pinterest.  Only, I subbed in lime green for the light blue and used yellow only sparingly.  With that in mind, take a peek at the paint colors I selected.

Because I’m kind of lazy when it comes to painting, I chose not to repaint the entire room.  Instead, I opted to paint over the existing color blocking that was in place.  What is now gray, was formerly blue and what is now orange was formerly red.

From there, it was pretty easy to settle on bedding.  I picked up an inexpensive navy blue quilt and bright orange sheeting from Target.  The pillows, too, are from Target.  It’s tough to tell in this picture, but there is an itty bitty yellow stripe on that blue pillow.  See?  Yellow was only very sparingly used.

For budgetary reasons, we opted to keep the existing furniture, which is a cherryish color.

Above the bed, we went with six clipboards (a Pinterest idea!).  Those were purchased from Office Max at a whopping two bucks each.  Assorted artwork is displayed on the clipboards, including a clown drawing that my Grams just recently sent me for my birthday.  It was something my deceased Aunt Sharon drew as a child.  One of my favorite things about Jayce’s new room is that it incorporates some elements (like that drawing) that are very meaningful.  Both Jeff and I created custom art for the room and Jayce’s prized acorns are also displayed.

I also ordered a few paper airplane wall vinyls (also a Pinterest idea!) from an Etsy store and incorporated those into the design.

With this room redo, we wanted to give our big 1st grader a spot to do his homework.

This desk was a Wal-Mart find ($35).  The cool lime green office chair ($20) came from Wal-Mart, too.  I thought the desk was perfect because it featured a black top and I’m a big believer in the old adage that every room should have a bit of black.  It does lack drawers for storage, though.  But that’s nothing a couple inexpensive wire baskets from Target’s dollar spot can’t fix.  We store the wire baskets on the desk shelves.  I picked up that industrial locker looking storage bin from Target as well–on clearance even!  Above the desk, Jeff hung two black shelves.

While I’m happy with the display on the top shelf, the bottom one doesn’t thrill me.  For now, we have his Disney racers displayed there, along with a West Point letter (Daddy’s Alma mater) and Jayce’s acorn collection.  Back to the top shelf, though.  The wooden toys were a gift from Jayce’s godparents.  And the canvas?  Isn’t it just perfect for that spot?  I got it from Printcopia.com and I love how it turned out.  The quality is excellent and the size I chose (11×14) is perfect for the space.  Here’s a closer look.

For the wall opposite the bed, I was stuck with what to do.  That is, until I found this awesome T-Rex faux taxidermy on Etsy.  It was a rather spendy piece, but worth every penny, in my opinion.

Jeff actually created the aged backboard for it.  Typically, handyman type of tasks are not his strength, but he so totally rocked this one.  He bought brand new boards and aged them by hand using a technique he found online.  Tell me that piece is not meant to be in a boy’s room.  Within the same wall grouping, I hung another custom piece of artwork, also inspired by Pinterest.

In case you’re not up on your geography, allow me to explain.  I painted the outline of our home state, Arizona, on a random page torn from a book.  The teensy little heart is–more or less–where Tucson is located in Arizona.  Cute, right?  Here’s how the whole wall came together.

Last but not least is the curtain panel.  It’s actually a canvas drop cloth hung from galvanized pipe.  I love how it comes together with the desk to add some industrial oomph to the room.

While it lacks an overall theme, it fits our boy perfectly.  I love love love it, and so does he.  What do you think?
