Scene from the morning after

Exactly two weeks after the first day back, the district threw the kids a bone with a random Monday off.  Both big sisters slept away over the weekend: nights spent at pool parties with Facebook posts to prove it.

“Can me and Cassie have a sleepover?” Jayce asks.  And because–technically–it’s still summer and also because we can’t resist the cuteness, we agree.

A blanket fort is erected with toy bins and LEGO boxes standing in for a firm foundation.  Beneath the fleece canopy I lie between him and her and we say bedtime prayers, Cassie whispering thanks for her brother Jayce that she loves so much.  All tucked in we don’t hear another peep from them but I imagine them there: forging bonds unbreakable and whispering their Scoot Overs!

I tiptoe in–Jeff behind with his flashlight–and we find them snug and snoring.  The mom in me briefly considers the likelihood of smothering by fallen blanket fort but I don’t voice the fear to Jeff because I can just hear his incredulous really? so I let it go.

Morning giggles prove his rightness.
