Last week, I had the pleasure of attending a media preview for a brand new location (6970 E. 22nd St) of a favorite fast casual restaurant here in Tucson: Smashburger. Smashburger serves up fresh (never frozen) 100% Angus beef burgers, chicken sandwiches and a variety of salads.
If you’re not familiar with the concept, Smashburger gets its name from the method they use to cook their burgers. They start with a meatball and then, well, smash the meat on a 400 degree flat grill to sear in the juices. They adhere to a similar process with their chicken breast for the juiciest and most flavorful chicken sandwiches.
Unlike the fast food burger chain giants, Smashburger sets itself apart by highlighting regional flavors and customizing a burger for each city. Here in Tucson, Smashburger offers the Arizona burger that–in addition to lettuce and tomato– boasts habanero cheese, guacamole, chipotle mayo and fresh jalapenos on a spicy chipotle bun. Those particular flavor combinations run a bit spicy for my sensitive palate; I prefer the spinach, cucumber and goat cheese chicken sandwich. And for the ultimate burger joint indulgence, you really can’t go wrong with one of Smashburger’s handspun Häagen-Dazs shakes (my personal flavor of choice would be the salted caramel). One last thing worth mentioning is that Smashburger also offers a small selection of wine and beer

My favorite is the BBQ, Bacon, and Cheddar Burger…but I agree that the chicken sandwiches are top-notch! Also, you can’t go wrong with a Haagen-Dazs milkshake. Try Strawberry (so good!).
Just went and tried their original and I’d love to try the one with the avocado all over it!
The BBQ Bacon Cheddar Burger is the best – even the $15 burger places can’t touch it.

I have never been to Smashburger, but now based on your blog post I’m tempted to skip the healthy dinner I planned for tonight and head over there. Holy cow! I might have just dripped some drool on my computer. Those skinny onion ring things on top of the burger look delicious, and those shakes are probably my love language. I’m pretty sure, at least.
